Trophy-sized bluegills are a premiere sport fish that require homework and patience to catch. Armed with a small jon boat and trolling motor, Wired2Fish’s McKeon Roberts slips out on a remote lake to pursue plate-sized bluegills using small jigs and plastics.

Finding healthy patches of broadleaf grass on mid-depth flats is the first step. McKeon uses 2D sonar in conjunction with long drifts to locate grass patches while dragging a light 1/16-ounce jig and plastic behind the boat. When he finds some fish (usually around quality grass), Roberts marks the spot with a waypoint then fishes the area thoroughly using the transom trolling motor to maintain position.
